Any Given Sunday, Oliver Stone’s salute-cum-expose of pro football, belabors some pretty obvious points for nigh onto three hours; but between the frenetic editing, the pounding rap-music beats, and several flashy performances, it’s certainly never dull. Al Pacino, coach of the fictional Miami Sharks (the NFL declined involvement in this production), struggles with the most time-honored of sports movie dilemmas: what to do with the old friend who’s past his prime and the young hotshot who could save the franchise but first has to learn what being a team player is all about. Comedian Jamie Foxx does a marvelous dramatic turn as the rookie quarterback whose ego and talent are equally impressive, while Pacino seems more at ease in Oliver Stone Land than any actor since regular James Woods (on hand as well as a sleazy team doctor). Prowling the sidelines, shouting spittle-flecked orders, seizing up in almost physical pain when a play goes the wrong way, Pacino is as unashamedly–and entertainingly–hyperbolic as Stone’s whirling montages of boiling storm clouds, bloodthirsty fans, and players smashed into the mud. (Once again football, perhaps the most sophisticated of team sports, is viewed cinematically as a bunch of guys hitting each other in slow motion.) Unfortunately, all the self-conscious mythologizing and pumped-up macho posturing that Stone can muster doesn’t conceal a cliched, slapped-together script, whose few good ideas (mostly about race in America) jostle about with several hoary, terrible ones–including a too-literal analogy of football players as modern gladiators. (To drive the point home, Stone includes Charlton Heston–the aging Ben-Hur–in one of many star-powered cameos.) All in all, Any Given Sunday is never dull, but never very enjoyable, either. –Bruce Reid

The premiere issu of this DVD magazine emphasizes Circuit’s commitment to peering behind the curtains of contemporary rock & roll. Start cute with a visit by Swedish rockers the Cardigans to an upscale bowling alley, accompanied by four different cuts of the band’s dark and controversial video for “My Favorite Game.” Dig a little deeper with an excerpt from Banks Tarver’s documentary about the exemplary Dayton indie group Guided By Voices, whose weathered, late-30s members are seen at one point looking as fresh as Hanson in an ancient photograph. The post-Bill Berry R.E.M. celebrates its techno-heavy album Up; separate interviews with Mike Mills, Peter Buck, and Michael Stipe go into some detail about the band’s reinvention during the making of the densely layered, melancholy record. A live performance by Grant Lee Buffalo is preceded by footage of a sound check–totally unnecessary to see, of course, but pretty cool all the same. The most interesting piece in this anthology, however, is a black-and-white interview with Beck (conducted by an off-screen, robotic voice), who illuminates the mysteries behind his songwriting process and reveals he once lived without electricity for 15 weeks. (Thus all those acoustic songs.) There are also interviews with Cake, producer Paul Kimble, and the Stooges’ Ron Asheton. Less compelling, perhaps, is an anachronistic video for Rialto’s drippy “5:19 (Monday Morning),” but you take the bad with the good. In this case there’s plenty of the latter, and with alternate soundtracks and DVD-ROM features, this premiere issu takes full advantage of DVD’s potential. –Tom Keogh

Romeo and Juliet: Angelin Preljocaj’s startling choreography of Shakespeare’s tragic star-crossed lovers, set to Sergei Prokofiev’s powerful score, is performed by the Lyon Opera Ballet, widely acclaimed for their stylish and innovative productions. The contrast between the ballet’s cold environment and the lovers’ heated encounters is beautifully realized in supple and imaginative duts danced by Pascale Doye and Nicolas Dufloux

Orson Welles wrote The Big Brass Ring in the early 1980s–his last attempt to create a commercial Hollywood film–but the dynamic, rich screenplay was never produced. Nearly two decades later, independent filmmaker and documentarian George Hickenlooper (Hearts of Darkness) purchased and rewrote Welles’ script, updating the tale of an independent presidential candidate in the cynical post-Watergate years to a more modest gubernatorial race in the media-saturated 1990s. The generally reserved William Hurt is excellent as the firebrand candidate whose secret, repressed past is dredged up when estranged father figure and political rebel Nigel Hawthorne (in a wry, flamboyant performance) reappears on the eve of the election. While the world’s attention is focused on a political contest between two independents, Hurt searches his soul to come to peace with the compromises and sacrifices of his youth.

Where Welles’ script is suffused with the melancholy sense of loss of an old man looking back on past mistakes, the film is brightened with the hope and possibilities of a younger man looking ahead to unlimited possibility. Hurt gives his best performance in decades as a man whose confidence is cracked by guilt. Less convincing is French beauty Irene Jacob as an international reporter while Miranda Richardson, though excellent, gets lost as the story sidesteps her sad alcoholic character. We’ll never know what Welles could have done with his story, but Hickenlooper delivers a handsome, compelling drama. –Sean Axmaker
